GeoTech Students Construct Community Connections

Webster Schroeder High School GeoTech students have been constructing connections within Webster CSD and with the community at-large.

GeoTech offers select Webster CSD high school students the opportunity to explore math, science and technology through hands-on learning by combining elements of geometry and construction.

The Friends of the Webster Public Library approached GeoTech teachers Kerry Crawford and TJ Milliman about having their students build new bookcases for the book sale cove at the library. The Friends paid for the materials while the students freely provided the skills to build the new bookcases to specifications.

On December 20, it was out with the old and in with the new as the GeoTech students and their teachers arrived on-site to remove the old bookcases and install the new ones. The library Friends then made quick work of filling the shelves.

The Friends report they are thrilled with the bookcases, saying that having the  students construct them makes the bookcases all the more special!

The bookcases are not the first project GeoTech students have constructed for others. In fact, since the program’s inception in 2018, GeoTech students from Webster Schroeder and Webster Thomas high schools have constructed numerous projects, including storage barns, Adirondack chairs, outdoor learning area, and, more recently, a giant sandbox for the preschool children at Schroeder.

For all of these projects, funds were donated while the students were instrumental in designing, determining materials needed (including the volume of sand!), shopping for materials, and building the projects.

The new bookcases built by GeoTech students were quickly put in to use and filled.
