Sixth graders have been exploring STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) within the classroom, with lessons focused on bioplastics and the enviroscape. During the lesson on bioplastics, students became chemical engineers to recreate some properties in plastic products we use everyday, using plant-based materials. During the enviroscape lessons, students observed what happens when pollutants are introduced to a watershed and identified point vs. non-point sources of pollution. These lessons are part of a STEM-specific curriculum created by the district’s Enrichment/STEM Instructional Coaching Team.
