Throughout the school year, the lost and found in each Webster CSD school accumulates numerous items that are never claimed. Within the One Webster community, there are individuals and families experiencing clothing shortages. Cori Horn’s class at Willink Middle School saw how the one situation could benefit the other!
The students and their teacher spearheaded a project in which they gathered the lost and found items from not only their school but also from other One Webster buildings.
They washed, dried, folded, sorted, and packed the items and then donated them to Webster Hope (formerly Hope House). The Webster-based non-profit is a social justice ministry that provides, among other things, clothing to Webster residents in need.
“I am so grateful for the participation we received in the Lost and Found initiative,” said Horn. “Together, we were able to donate 36 copy paper boxes of lost and found items to Webster Hope. Additionally, four bags and one box of lost and found items were donated to a Willink retiree who brings the items to various places that service families in need.”
“This was an incredibly organized donation,” Webster Hope posted to its Facebook page. “Hope volunteers said it was the easiest donation of the year to put out for our recipients. Thank you so much for helping us!”
The Lost and Found program was such a success that there are already plans to repeat it. “We had such a great time and are looking forward to doing it again in the spring!” Horn said.
