At Fairbanks Road School in Churchville-Chili, third and fourth grade students are learning to be lifelong learners and enthusiastic readers. Students recently focused on Women’s History and a theme based on the vocabulary word “Influential.” Each student selected a famous woman, read her biography and created a poster celebrating her accomplishments, along with a timeline of important events in her life. Students answered open-ended questions about their subject that required them to use their critical thinking and reading comprehension skills. This project was a fun way for students to learn about fascinating people and important events while practicing their reading, writing and research skills. “If a project is interesting and students really want to read, they are happy to work harder to achieve that goal,” said Literacy Teacher Caitlin Fitzgerald.
