Third grade students in Churchville Elementary School’s after school club, Page Turners, have been focusing on reading winter adventure-themed books. They recently learned about the Arctic and mushing while reading Emma Carlson Berne’s book, “Balto.” This heroic tale tells the story of sled dog Balto and his incredible race over snow-covered trails to bring much needed medicine to the children of Nome, Alaska. Julianne Westrich, the 2023 Iditarod Teacher on the Trail, recently shared Iditarod information with the students, discussed what is required of sled dogs and their drivers and explained the various challenges they face. Westrich brought actual equipment to share with the group, including the booties worn by a sled dog during a race to help prevent injuries and snow build-up. The students were inspired by this educational presentation and asked many insightful questions. Thank you, Mrs. Westrich, for bringing adventure to CES – good luck on the trail!
