Deb Vane has been driving a Spencerport school bus for 11 years. Her bus looks like all the other buses on the outside, but the colorful assortment of hood ornaments suggests something special inside.
“I had the opportunity to ride Deb’s bus recently and I’m amazed by the positive community she has fostered for these students,” said Taylor Principal Danielle Hoch. “She has taken the initiative to provide fidget activities for her riders and encourage creativity on what, for some students, is a major part of their school day.”
This exceptional bus culture has caught the attention of parents as well. The parents of kindergarten student Lincoln Horch also noticed and decided to join in the fun.
“(Lincoln’s) dad started a cheer with the kids every morning when we arrive at their bus stop,” said Vane. “He says, ‘Good morning, Taylor students!’ and then counts ‘One, two, three, BOOM!’ The kids all yell ‘BOOM!’ with him and throw their hands in the air.”
Vane explained that this morning ritual is fun for the students, and it contributes to their sense of belonging. “I’ve always told the kids on my bus that we’re a family and I want them all to care about each other. I’m always encouraging positivity in the kids, so it’s great to have parents backing it up.”
Lincoln summed up his opinion of the morning ride to school by simply stating, “Miss Debbie is the best bus driver.”
