The Take a Look a Teaching (TALAT) club, available at both Mendon and Sutherland High Schools, offers the opportunity for students to learn about education as a profession and help them decide if teaching is a good career choice for them. By exploring teaching as an option early, students can better understand the rewards, challenges, and demands associated with the profession. At a time when there is a shortage of teachers and school support staff, TALAT helps students deepen their understanding of the diverse roles of educators, and the various fields within education, through hands-on experiences and discussions on current issues.
Students involved with TALAT engage in discussion on topics related to teaching such as how to write lesson plans, classroom management, and the importance of differentiating instruction. Students also shadow teachers within the District to see what it is like in front of the classroom.
Ronak is a junior at Mendon High School and is interested in pursuing a career in education. He had the opportunity to shadow one of his former teachers, Mrs. Housler-Rojas, at Park Road Elementary School and step into the shoes of a teacher.
“I want to be a teacher because it’s really important to help kids in their development,” explained Ronak. When asked who was one of his teaching inspirations, he mentioned Mrs. Housler-Rojas, “she definitely helped me come out of my shell.”
Early exposure to career pathways allows students to make more informed decisions for their future. Involvement in TALAT has helped provide some perspective into the world of teaching and ignite a passion for education. “It’s just a great program,” said Ronak.
Pittsford Schools is proud to invest in the future of education through our Take a Look at Teaching Club as a pipeline for the next generation of exceptional teachers making a difference in the lives of others.
