All Spencerport High School seniors must complete a senior project as the culmination of a student’s formal education in the district. The project is designed to reflect the district’s Strategic Plan by affording students the opportunity to “passionately pursue a personal interest”, including the creation of a product, a written research paper and a presentation of their project to a panel. Students are encouraged to pursue a project that incorporates their academic strengths with their interests outside of school.
Principal Sean McCabe said, “I have had the great fortune of working at Spencerport High School since the Senior Project was first proposed as a graduation requirement 15 years ago. During that time, since its first inception to today, I have seen countless examples of how students have been able to pursue a topic of interest to them and then demonstrate their knowledge of that topic by using a wide variety of academic skills they have acquired in over their 13 years as a student.”
Through the years students have created and presented on a whole spectrum of topics including areas that are of career interest, community service, fundraisers to help those who are suffering from an illness or life challenge, or social justice programs.
“Regardless of the topic chosen, the sense of pride students demonstrate when they complete the project is awesome to witness,” McCabe said.
The 2021-22 school year reinstates the senior project after two years of its cancelation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
