Twenty years ago, new teachers were having difficulty finding teaching positions in the New York state, prompting many to relocate to southern states for job opportunities.  The pendulum has now swung the other way with a projection that New York state alone will need 180,000 NEW teachers in the next decade.  Additionally, colleges (locally and nationally) have cited a 53% decline in enrollment in teacher education programs, and the New York State Union of Teachers projects that 1/3 of New York teachers could retire in the next five years.
