Books let you travel without moving your feet. That was certainly the case with Michelle Mika’s fourth-grade class at Neil Armstrong. They read Laurie Calkhoven’s “Boys of Wartime: Daniel at the Siege of Boston 1776” as part their lesson on the American Revolution. Mika, impressed with the conversations the book sparked during read-aloud sessions, reached out to the author about connecting with the students virtually to discuss the book. The children’s book writer happily agreed, and with the help of Innovation Coach Mike Munski, the class was able to connect to Calkhoven via Skype Classroom. The class’ enthusiasm was evident during their 40-minute Skype Classroom call. Students asked Calkhoven questions and discussed important points and themes in the book.
